One way to cope with big city life is to get a new four-legged friend! Dog adoption in NYC can be overwhelming, so we’ve narrowed down the top five rescues to consider.

ASPCA Adoption Center

The ASPCA is a well known organization, and for good reason. It’s been around since 1866 and helps animals in a variety of ways. Their adoption process is easy to navigate and can be done same-day if you have the proper paperwork and money for the fees.

The Adoption Center is open Mon-Sat from 11am to 7pm and on Sunday from 11am to 6pm.

Bideawee

Another group with a long history, Bideawee has been around for over 115 years. Like many rescues, you will need to fill out an application, present a photo ID and pay a nominal fee.

The “matchmakers” at Bideawee are trained to match you with a dog that will fit your lifestyle including activity level, space requirements and getting along with other animals.

Animal Care Centers of NYC

This rescue group offers a substantial adoption package that includes spaying or neutering, a free exam, an embedded microchip. Your package also includes a leash, dog license and heartworm test.

Animal Care Centers strives to find loving homes for homeless and abandoned dogs. The center adopts animals directly to the public and partners with more than 200 dedicated animal placement organizations.

The Humane Society of New York

The Humane Society of New York has been providing ill, injured and abused New York City animals with a home for over 100 years. The center is more than just a shelter; its number one goal is to provide pets with top care at an affordable price and a home-like atmosphere.

In addition to adoptions, this facility offers a full range of wellness and diagnostic care for your dog.

Animal Haven

Founded in 1967, Animal Haven is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs throughout the Tri-State area, and provides behavior intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption.

There are a few requirements to adopt:

  • Must be 21 to adopt.
  • All interested adopters must meet an animal in-person at the shelter before an application can be submitted for that animal.
  • We ask for a personal reference (this can be a family member, friend, employer) who can attest to your ability to care for a pet.
  • Adopters who live in apartments will be required to show proof that pets are allowed. This can be provided in the form of a lease, phone number of a leasing office, landlord, super or property website.
  • If you currently have a pet, a vet reference will be required.
  • Some adoptions can be done same-day. Others may take more time to complete.
