  • Two Incredible Non-Profit Organizations (And How You Can Support Them!)

    by David Comiskey

At Barkly Pets, we’re committed to helping dogs get the care they deserve. One of the ways we show it is by connecting dog walkers with pet owners who want reliable care for their furry friends. But what you might not know is that we have an interest in caring for people and animals beyond those that we help serve. So in the spirit of helping to promote a worthy cause, we’d like to share two organizations with you that are making a difference in the world and how you can get involved!

The NYC Mayor’s Alliance for Animals

The NYC Mayor’s Alliance for Animals is an organization that works towards “transforming New York City into a community where no dogs or cats of reasonable health and temperament be killed merely because they do not have homes.” This is an initiative that aligns with our own core values. The Mayor’s Animal Alliance project works towards achieving this mission by working with over 150 animal rescue organizations and shelters in the NYC area to help provide care and nourishment to homeless animals. They also play a huge role in helping these homeless animals find a home where they’ll be properly loved and cared for through their Mega Pet Adoption events.

If you’d like to get involved with the NYC Mayor’s Alliance for Animals there are a variety of ways you can do so. Obviously any and all donations to support this organization are welcome; especially since they are supported entirely by donations from foundations, corporations, and individuals. Or if you’d prefer to just donate your time, they offer a bunch of different volunteer opportunities like doing so at a shelter, rescue or one of their Mega Adoption events.

The Urban Research Institute’s PALS program (URINYC)

Additionally, URINYC supports a cause that’s near and dear to our hearts at Barkly Pets – through their PALS program they help domestic abuse victims safely relocate and rebuild their lives without sacrificing the safety of their pet. The stat on the front of their PALS program web page says it all: “As many as 48% of domestic violence victims stay in abusive situations because they fear what would happen if they left their pets behind.” In order to fight back and lower this statistic, URINYC began the PALS program in 2013. By providing co-living domestic violence shelters, pets and their families are able to heal together. The PALS program at URINYC has now grown to 52 domestic violence shelter units to help families in need, and they’ve already helped over 100 different animals and their owners. That’s a lot of families and pets that they’ve cared for, but they’re looking to expand and could use some help!

You can get involved with the PALS program to support domestic abuse victims and their families (and pets!) by making a donation to PALS. Even if it’s a small donation – every little bit helps! You can also help support and raise awareness for the cause on social media by using their hashtags #ProtectPetsToo and #PALSsPurina.

If you’d like to make an even bigger impact on these organizations by raising a greater amount of money than you could provide by yourself, consider organizing a fundraiser in your local area! You could do anything from a bottle and can drive, to a car wash, to a charity golf event! It’s never been easier to set up an event with all the free fundraiser event planning tools available. Be sure to take full advantage of these services and other technology to raise more awareness about your event and have an even greater impact on your cause!

We’re extremely glad that organizations like these exist to offer help and support to both people and animals in need of care. So a big thank you to the NYC Mayor’s Alliance for Animals and URINYC’s PALS program for all the incredible work that you do!
