  • What is the Best Arlington Dog Park?

    by Andrew Borgschulte

Arlington, VA is located just across the river from Washington, DC and is home to many luxury apartments, great nightlife and most recently, the future home of Amazon’s HQ2. In addition to all that, there are also several great dog parks. Let’s run through the top four and discuss the differences between them to ensure you find the best Arlington dog park for you and your pup.

    Benjamin Banneker Park

This park is run by Banneker Dogs, Inc., which is an association established and financed by park users. This park is sponsored in agreement with Arlington County, and offers a fenced-in area for off-leash play, plenty of disposal areas for dog waste, and nearly an acre of space.

Additionally, this dog park is located inside of Banneker Park, which has a playground and other recreation areas for adults and children.

    James Hunter Dog Park

This park is certainly on the fancy side with synthetic turf and a large fountain/pool for swimming and playing, all located right off Clarendon’s main strip. Dogs are allowed off-leash in certain marked areas and the park is closed Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am and noon for maintenance.

This will likely be one of the busier Arlington dog parks as it is located right in the heart of the city.

    Glencarlyn Dog Park

Glencarlyn is a little different in that it is in a wooded area and does not have fencing surrounding it. This might not be the best choice if your pup is prone to go off on an unsupervised adventure, but its tucked away location provides a tranquil spot to throw around a tennis ball.

This park is open from sunrise until one half hour after sunset and backs up to Four Mile Run. If your dog enjoys swimming in a natural body of water, this is the place to be!

    Shirlington Dog Park

Last but certainly not least is Shirlington dog park. This is the biggest and busiest Arlington dog park with 109,000 square feet of open space. There is also a separate area for smaller dogs and access to a stream.

For all of those reasons, Shirlington is widely considered the best Arlington dog park. Like the other Arlington parks, it is open from sunrise to one half hour after sunset. It also has a great history and was one of the first officially recognized off-leash dog areas in the region and was recently named the top dog park in the country by Link AKC.

    And the winner is…

In our opinion, Shirlington Dog Park offers the most complete experience for dogs and dog owners across the board. Be sure to check all four of these out and let us know what you think!

These parks are all wonderful and anytime your pup can get outside and run free is a great time. But life often gets in the way, and if you need a reliable, vetted service to walk your dog, look no further than Barkly Pets. Sign up here today!
