I got my start training dogs in college when I adopted an abandoned puppy. He had aggression issues, which required me to get help from an aggression specialist Jim Ottoson, who became a mentor to me. He recommended me to his friends at the Norfolk SPCA, where I worked for almost two years. My duties included training, rehabilitation, taking in new dogs, and vetting/approving adopters. In my time there I worked with over 1500 dogs, and received formal training from world class trainers who basically travel around to shelters educating kennel workers on positive, modern, training techniques.
